Your kidneys are the body's filtration system, cleaning waste out of your blood every single day.
One of the biggest threats to them is diabetes. Over time, high blood sugar damages the kidneys and causes scarring, slowly stopping them from filtering properly. This is one of the leading causes of kidney failure in the world.
Once that scarring sets in, it's very hard to reverse, so scientists wanted to know whether quercetin could help protect against it.
The study
Researchers gave quercetin to diabetic rats with kidney damage over a four-month period, testing three different doses.
Before treatment, the diabetic kidneys showed all the classic signs of damage: poor filtering, protein leaking into the urine, and a build-up of scar tissue.
After quercetin treatment, kidney function markers improved across the board, the scarring and damage in the kidney tissue was reduced, and the higher the dose of quercetin, the greater the protection.
In other words, quercetin didn't just slow the damage. It helped reverse the signs of it.
What this means for us
This is another addition to quercetin's growing list of benefits.
Quercetin is already one of our most popular ingredients, known for fighting inflammation, supporting the immune system, and repairing DNA damage in human trials. Now we can add protecting the kidneys to that list.
Healthy kidneys are essential for a long, healthy life, keeping the rest of your body clean and balanced. Anything that helps protect them is worth knowing about.
