The word “senolytic” comes from senescence and -lytic. A senescent cell has lost it’s power of division and growth. A word ending with lytic just means to destroy. So a senolytic is something that destroys senescent cells in the body. Senescent cells are really bad for us, and contribute to ageing. They increase as we get older and create a toxic micro-environment around them, creating even more senescent cells.
There are many ways you can reduce senescent cells. Fasting has been shown to be one of the most powerful, particularly extended fasts. This is typically 4 or 5 days twice per year. It is important that you seek medical advice before undertaking extended fasts to ensure the correct supervision and no negative outcomes. Ongoing intermittent fasting looks like it will also help, and Do Not Age recommend intermittent fasting all year round for it’s multitude of longevity benefits. Most people find it easiest to have a four hour eating window each day, commonly referred to as 20:4.
Exercise is another great way to reduce senescent cells. Studies have proven the effect of this. One study from 2016 shows that exercise prevents both the accumulation of senescent cells as well as the expression of cells associated with causing senescence and inflammation.
In the latest studies, certain supplements have been shown to have a senolytic effect greater than the above. The most powerful senolytic supplement is fisetin, a plant flavanoid found naturally in certain foods. The highest concentration of fisetin in food is found in strawberries. Unfortunately, to get enough fisetin to activate its senolytic qualities, we would need to eat hundreds and hundreds of strawberries every day! As usual with our products, we have found the best ingredients for your body and concentrated them into easy to consume capsules. Nature gives us the answers, we just help it along!
