Billions of cells in your body die every day, and this is completely normal. Cells have an organised, predictable life cycle: they grow, replicate, divide into new cells, and die to make way for the next generation.
Sometimes, though, a cell enters a state where it stops dividing but stays alive. This is known as senescence, and it's a major reason our bodies decline with age.
As we get older, two things happen at once. More of our cells become senescent, and our bodies get worse at clearing them out. A build-up of senescent cells is linked to degenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease, to increased inflammation, and to cancer progression.
That's why cellular senescence is counted as one of the 12 hallmarks of ageing.
Simple ways to reduce senescence
Exercise regularly. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce senescence. Resistance training in particular has been shown to reduce senescent cells in skeletal muscle by 48 to 73%.
Protect your sleep. Poor sleep drives oxidative stress, which contributes to senescence. Regular, high-quality sleep works against it.
Something to try
A 30-minute walk daily is enough to help your body clear out senescent cells, on top of the many other benefits that come with it.
Where DoNotAge® fits
Our 15-in-1 daily drink targets all 12 hallmarks of ageing, including cellular senescence.
